Shop in Canterbury Street, Gillingham, target of robbery with its staff threatened and assaulted

A man is to appear in court charged with robbery and assault after staff at a shop were attacked.

The store in Canterbury Street, Gillingham, was targeted by a man who went in and demanded money at around 6.30pm on Friday, February 2.

He then reportedly threatened staff before assaulting them.

Police were called and later the same day arrested a suspect.

Tommy Presley, of Coopers Road, Gravesend, was charged with robbery and assault by beating.

The 30-year-old was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on March 4.

Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Constable Scott Bittlestone said: “We understand that there were a number of customers inside the shop who we have not been able to trace at this stage.

“They may have information which is important to our investigation, and I am urging them to contact our appeal line.”

Police were asked to clarify which shop the alleged attack happened in but a spokesman said they could not disclose that information.
