A man has been arrested after another was left unconscious in the middle of a street.
Police were called to Chatham High Street at around 6pm.
One shop owner called an ambulance when she saw the man, in his 40s, on the floor.
She said: “There was about 50 people around this poor man after but no one was doing anything. They were just recording.
“If it weren’t for his belly moving up and down I would have said he was dead.
“He wasn’t wearing a shirt and only had grey shorts on so seeing a cut would be easy.
“The only blood cam from his mouth.”
It is alleged that while the victim was laying on the ground, a second man stole his wallet.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to Medway Maritime Hospital where he remains in serious condition.
All emergency service had left the scene by about 8pm, but forensics reutrned to the high street, near Go Outdoors, this morning
Officers arrested a man on suspicion of assault.
Police has issued an appeal for anyone with information to call 01634 729209 and quote reference 46/110983/23.

Detetcive inspector, Paul Fewtrell, said: “It is understood there were several people in the area at the time of the incident and motorists may have been driving along this section of the High Street or on surrounding roads.
“We are appealing to witnesses or anyone with information to contact us. Motorists with dashcam are also asked to check for relevant footage.”
