A man was punched and kicked as he waded into a row to prevent a woman being assaulted.

The victim, in his 40s, was walking home with his wife when they came across an altercation in Rainham High Street.

A group of young men, in their late teens or early 20s, were arguing with a family outside the Cricketers pub.

The man stepped in to stop a woman from being hit, but was himself attacked by up to six people. He suffered cuts and bruises.

The attack happened shortly before 1am on Sunday, May 22 but details have only just been released by police.

Officers say they have carried out extensive enquiries, speaking to residents and door staff from local pubs.

PC Abbi Townsend said: "A large number of people have been spoken to, but we are yet to identify the offender.

"I believe that there are members of the community who know who was responsible for this assault and urge anyone with information about the incident to contact Kent Police as a priority."

Anyone with any information is asked to phone Kent Police on 01622 690690 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
