Thamesmead man charged in connection with assaults at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham

Reports of patients and staff in a hospital being attacked has resulted in a man being charged.

Police were called to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham at 11.35pm on Tuesday.

A witness said a man assaulted a security worker and a doctor in a “frenzy”.

Two men in their 40s and 50s had to be treated for face and head injuries.

A suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

Michael Akinola, of Waterside Close, Thamesmead, Greater London was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He was also charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assaulting an emergency worker and a public order offence.

The 22-year-old was remanded in custody to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court today (February 15).

Investigators are continuing to urge witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police to contact the appeal line.
