A uniformed soldier stabbed several times near an Army barracks has been pictured for the first time.

Lt Col Mark Teeton is in a serious but stable condition in hospital as a huge police presence remains in Sally Port Gardens in Brompton.

Armed police, forensics and other officers were called to the road near Brompton Barracks at about 6pm on Tuesday.

A 24-year-old man was arrested near his home in Mooring Road, Rochester, 30 minutes later.

It was confirmed this morning when he appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court that Anthony Esan has been charged on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Meanwhile, Lt Col Teeton has been pictured for the first time as he remains in hospital.

KentOnline understands the Royal Engineer lives in military accommodation in the street with his wife who is believed to have rushed to help him.

Army personnel living near the scene of the attack say the victim is a “very nice guy”.

A man living just down the road who gave his rank as sergeant described the soldier as “friendly”.

He said: “He’s a very nice guy, very friendly, but I don’t work closely with him. I’m not too sure if he has any children.”

Sir Keir Starmer, appearing at his first Prime Minister's Questions yesterday, opened by speaking about the incident.

“I know the whole house will be shocked by the news that a soldier has been attacked in Kent,” he said.

“Our thoughts are with him, his family and our Armed Forces who serve to keep us safe and we wish him a swift recovery.”

An Army spokesman said: “We’re very sorry to confirm that a soldier has sustained serious injuries in an attack.

“Our thoughts are with the soldier and their family and we request that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.

“We will continue to work closely with police to understand what happened and support the investigation.

“Anyone who witnessed the attack or who has any relevant information should contact Kent Police.”
