Chatham man charged with assaulting police officer and threatening pair with axe in Gillingham

A man is due to appear in court after allegedly threatening two police officers with an axe.

Two constables were called to Chaucer Road in Gillingham in the early hours of Tuesday to reports a car window was being smashed.

The pair arrived at around 2.36am where a suspect is accused of threatening them with the weapon.

One of the officers was allegedly assaulted as a man, who was brandishing an axe, tried to flee on foot.

He was subsequently arrested near the town centre and taken into custody.

Mark Cork, of East Street, Chatham, was charged with assaulting an emergency worker, possessing an axe in a public place and two counts of threatening a person with a bladed article.

The 44-year-old was remanded in custody to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court today (December 11).
