A community is in mourning after two people tragically died in a crash on the A228 at the weekend.

It follows an incident on the Ratcliffe Highway, Hoo, around 3.50pm where a silver Peugeot was said to have left the road and come to rest in a nearby field after hitting a road sign.

A woman in her 30s died at the scene, and a 29-year-old man died late yesterday afternoon.

Two children - aged seven and four - were also in the vehicle and had minor injuries.

The girls were taken to the Medway Maritime Hospital by ambulance and are now being cared for by relatives.

Emergency services including fire crews, paramedics and two air ambulances were called to the incident and passers-by rushed to help rescue the girls from the car.

Witness Taylor-Marie Thomson wrote on Twitter: "The car was completely crushed. Seeing the state of that car has literally made me feel sick to the stomach and close to tears."

Officers from the serious collision investigation unit are investigating the collision. On Saturday night the road was closed and diversions put in place.

Anyone with information about the collision, particularly anyone who saw the silver Peugeot travelling along the Medway-bound carriageway in the moments before the incident is urged to contact the police appeal line on 01622 798538.
