A man who flashed a seven-inch knife during a row outside a off-licence has been jailed, just two days after his arrest.

Joe Taylor, 24, was thrown out of moomoo nightclub, in Canterbury Street, Gillingham, just before 4am on Sunday.

He then walked to Baba Shop, on High Street, a 24-hour off-licence and became involved in a row with a passerby.

During this altercation he lifted up his shirt to reveal the blade tucked into his waist band.

No assault took place but Taylor, of Luton Road, Chatham, was arrested and found in possession of three ounces of cannabis.

He was charged with possession of a weapon and a class B drug and on Monday appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court via video link where he admitted both offences.

He was jailed for six months and ordered to pay £150.

Chief Inspector Rachel Harris of the Medway Community Safety Unit said: "This sentence illustrates our absolute determination to ensure that those who carry knives on our streets are dealt with robustly and swiftly.

"We are continuing our on-going crackdown on knife crime and the culture around it and this includes a zero-tolerance approach to anyone who we believe is carrying a weapon.

"Expect to be stopped and searched and expect to be brought before the courts at the earliest opportunity."

In a separate, unrelated incident, a 14-year-old boy stopped and searched by police in Overcliffe, Gravesend, was arrested on Tuesday, April 9, for possessing a knife and on suspicion of supplying a Class A drug.

The teenager was later released pending further investigation.
