A man has been jailed after attacking a man with a mug, causing serious head injuries.
Ivan Atanasov, 48, of Duncan Road in Gillingham, was jailed on Wednesday at Maidstone Crown Court after pleading guilty to one count of unlawful wounding.
The judge heard how police were called to Duncan Road following an altercation inside a property at about 11pm on June 15.
Inside the house officers saw a man lying on the floor with a large pool of blood around his head - and while a number of people were inside the property officers quickly identified Atanasov as the suspect.
He was found in the kitchen and had a small cut to a finger as well as dried blood. He was arrested at the scene.
The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for a large cut to the back of his head before being released.
During the investigation officers found that Atanasov, who is known to the victim, was involved in an altercation with him before he used a mug to hit the victim several times on the back of his head.
The force used was so severe that fragments of the mug were found inside the wound.
During his arrest, Atanasov had claimed self-defence however he was charged with one count of unlawful wounding and one count of wounding with intent.
He then pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding before being sentenced to two years and eight months imprisonment. The charge of wounding with intent was ordered to lie on file.
Investigating officer PC Matthew Wadhams said: "Atanasov carried out a violent attack on a man known to him. He inflicted a serious head wound which has left the victim with life-changing injuries.
"I hope the outcome of this case serves as a reminder to others that if you commit crime you will be caught and will face justice."
