A man had to be pulled from mud by coastguards near Upnor after trying to rescue his dog from the River Medway.
Medway coastguards were originally called to the scene to stop anybody trying to get to the dog yesterday (Tuesday) at about 5.15pm.
But on arrival they were told by the 46-year-old man's wife he had gone in the mud and slipped, injuring his leg.
A work boat from Medway Bridge Marina was also called to help.
The man was found on mud near the Royal Engineers jetty, close to Upnor Castle.
An ambulance was called and he was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital having thought to have suffered a torn ligament in his right leg.
Richard Rodgers, deputy station officer, said: "We would always advise people to stay away from the water and mud even if they have seen another person in trouble. The best thing to do is dial 999 and ask for help rather than risking more casualties.
"Although it may look safe there are many hidden dangers under the water and mud and the River Medway's currents are extremely strong.
"This incident fortunately ended well, but it does not always turn out like this and people can easily be seriously injured or worse."
Coastguards were at the scene for about an hour.
The dog was rescued unharmed.
