A man had to be rescued from the River Medway during the early hours of this morning.

The emergency services were called to Gillingham Pier shortly after 2am following reports that a man was in the water.

Police and ambulance crews went to the pier, in Pier Approach Road, in Gillingham, and officers called in firefighters to help get the man out.

However, a crew from Medway said by the time they arrived on the scene, officers had managed to rescue him.

It is not thought he suffered life-threatening injuries during the incident.

A spokesman for police in Medway said: “We were called to Gillingham Pier at 2.11am to reports of a man in the water who was conscious and breathing.

“He was rescued by patrols at about 2.19am and taken to hospital with suspected hypothermia.”
