A man is seriously ill in hospital after an incident on the M2.

Emergency services were called to the coast-bound carriageway just after 6pm on Friday, Friday.

The incident involved a red Fiat Punto. It is thought the man may have jumped from the moving vehicle.

The victim was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in London. No other vehicles are thought to have been involved and there were no passengers travelling in the car.

Police said the man sustained serious injuries.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: “The car collided with the central reservation and set light to a small area of grass.

“The car was about 500 metres away from the victim.”

The M2 was closed between Junction 3 for Chatham and Junction 4 for Gillingham. Diversions were in place and police were asking motorists to avoid the area.

Some motorists have been delayed for two hours in the queue approaching Junction 3.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward. Anyone with any information which may help police with their enquiries is asked to contact the serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798535.
