Medway's Mayor Vaughan Hewett’s all-action year in office will reach new heights tomorrow when he abseils 200ft down a tower block.
Joined by former Gills player and coach Nicky Southall and about a hundred others, Cllr Hewett will take the plunge for charity at Melville Court in Chatham.
Taking inspiration from the London 2012 Olympics, the abseil is one of a number of events, including a river swim and a 10km walk along the river sea wall, that Cllr Hewett has organised to highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Speaking during a visit to the Medway Messenger’s offices, he said; "You don’t have to work out in the gym every day. We have some wonderful parks and open spaces in Medway and we should all make the most of them."
As part of the Healthy Heart campaign, the mayor has already led an 18-mile cycle around the Heron Trail on the Hoo Peninsula.
There will also be a 10km walk along the river sea wall next Sunday, September 30 and an evening of ski-ing and tobogganing at Chatham Ski Slope on October 24.
Cllr Hewett has already taken part in one abseil since he became mayor. He tackled the tower at St Nicholas Church in Strood in July.
The mayor’s charities this year are Medway Schools Partnership, Medway Citizens Advice Bureau and Scouts and Guides associations.
