A man from Medway has been killed in a power boat accident.

Alex Edmonds, 41, from Lower Stoke, was killed during the annual Dover Regatta.

It is thought Mr Edmonds, who is a member of Allhallows Yacht Club, suffered head and chest injuries when his boat collided with another during an organised race yesterday, Saturday.

Reports have suggested the other boat was being driven by another member of Allhallows Yacht Club and the two men were friends.

Firefighters, police, ambulance crews and the Kent Air Ambulance were called to the harbour when the accident happened at about 12.40pm.

Mr Edmonds was pronounced dead at the scene by an air ambulance doctor.

Dover Regatta is an annual event organised by the Dover Sea Sports Development Trust.

Chairman Bill Fawcus said the decision was taken following Mr Edmond’s death to halt all power boat races due to take place during the remainder of the two-day programme of events. Other events however will continue.

Mr Fawcus added: “The parents have said they feel their son would not have wanted the regatta cancelled.”

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family, friends and colleagues in power boating.”

Kent Police and the Marine Accident Investigation Board will both be conducting an investigation into the death.

Simon Smith, station commander at Dover Fire Station, said: “The Port of Dover Police has impounded the two boats and Kent Police will be conducting an investigation.”
