Two men accused of kidnapping and beheading a Medway woman have admitted their guilt, according to her son.

Distant relatives of Surjit Kaur, who lived in Chatham, are said to have confessed to killing her on a visit to her native India earlier this year.

The mother-of-three, a British citizen who had lived in this country for about 50 years and had a flat in Clover Street, was one of her regular trips to her homeland.

The 67-year-old went missing from her son’s holiday home at the end of March.

Her son, Baljinder Singh, of Imperial Road, Gillingham, got an emergency visa to India only to discover his mother’s body had been found.

Two men were charged with murder and kidnap. Mrs Kaur’s, family have no idea why she was killed.

Now father-of-two Mr Singh has revealed the judicial process has started in India, with the accused pleading guilty to the crime in the Kapurthala district of Punjab.

Mr Singh, 40, said: "Several witnesses have given evidence. The process stops and starts about every three weeks and I still expect it to take up to another three to six months to finish.

Mr Singh feared the case would be hampered because of corruption among the Indian authorities.

He asked Gillingham and Rainham MP Rehman Chishti to help in their quest to see her killers brought to justice.

Mr Chishti, who raised the matter with Prime Minister in the House of Commons, liaised with the Foreign Office to help the family.

He said: "I’m pleased to hear the accused have pleaded guilty to this horrific murder of this Medway resident.

"It seems that justice will be done for the family and I was happy to be able to assist them in this matter.

"I’d also like to thank all the agencies who assisted with the matter, that includes police in Medway."
