Pub-goers and clubbers in Rochester have been searched by police in a drugs clampdown.

Officers went to a total of 10 licensed venues and searched 28 people.

They cautioned a 29-year-old man for possession of cocaine, charged one with being drunk and disorderly and ordered two people to leave the area. The Casino nightclub, in Blue Boar Lane, worked alongside officers by allowing the Ion Track machine to be used as a condition of entry. In total 128 clubbers were tested using the machine and 46 people were found positive for traces of drugs.

Sgt Mark Carron said: "All the licensees are supportive of these random spot-checks, as they too do not want to see any drug use in their premises.

"We were fortunate to have the use of the Kent Police Dog Unit during the evening, as the dogs are experts at detecting even the slightest trace of drugs. There really is no escape for anyone thinking of bringing drugs into Medway on a night out."
