People are being encouraged to paint the Towns red white and blue to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Medway Council is advising anyone who wants to organise a street party or community event over the Bank Holiday weekend of June 2 to June to get in touch now.

Arrangements for parties taking place on public highways need to be made in advance, to ensure they are in an appropriate place and that the correct signage is being used.

Residents who would like to find out more about organising a street party can download a guide from the council’s website, which follows the government’s guidelines for making sure people can have fun without having to go through excessive forms and red tape.

Those wishing to apply for a road closure for their party are asked to return the form at least four weeks before the big day.

Cllr Rodney Chambers, leader of Medway Council, said: "The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is one of the most important events in the life of our country and in Medway’s Year of Celebration, and we want to make it as easy as possible for residents to enjoy this special day with their neighbours and community.

"I would urge anyone wanting to organise a street party to get in touch now, as the sooner we receive applications the sooner we can offer advice and help."

The call from the council comes as the Lord-Lieutenant of Kent, Viscount De L’Ilse, encouraged people to organise events to mark the anniversary in June.

Speaking at the annual civic service at Rochester Cathedral, which celebrates the contribution hundreds of people in Kent make to their communities, he said: "If your local area is yet to organise and event, I hope that you as leaders in your communities will drum up support."

Last year there were seven official street parties in Medway to mark the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
