Former javelin world record holder Steve Backley believes generations of Medway residents will benefit from the 2012 London Olympics.
Three-time Olympic medallist Backley claims that Medway is well placed to reap the rewards from taking a proactive approach to the games.
With developments including the £11million Medway Park changing the face of sporting facilities, Backley believes the legacy of the Olympics will last for a long time.
"Everything you could want is here," said Backley. "The facilities are clearly improving and the other thing is the non-tangible benefits, and the inspiration to our sporting youth.
"It's those things that will serve Medway and the legacy of 2012 will last for generations.
"Now the infrastructure is in place, that's just the start. The legacy of 2012 is more important."
Backley predicted that Medway can expect to see an increase in people taking an active role in sport. Participation in sport was one of the key elements behind London's bid to stage the Olympics and Backley believes that Medway's 2012 vision, driven by Bob Dimond, the project manager for the Medway Park development, is leading the way across the country.
"Medway is brilliant because of its geographical location and the team that's behind it," said Backley. "That's why I've got to shout so loud about them.
"I do get to see teams like them around the country and Medway are better. They are forthcoming and take the initiative, they are everything you would want them to be.
"Everyone is expecting more and Medway will thrive and continue to grow. It's a region that is growing well and the trend has gone off the scale.
"There will be a health and fitness drive and people will want to participate beacuse that's what sport does."
