A former Medway pupil has become the most recent soldier to die while on duty in Afghanistan.

Captain Daniel Read, who did his GCSEs at Rainham Mark Grammar School, was killed in an explosion in Musa Qaleh in northern Helmand province on January 11.

The 31-year-old was with the 11 Explosive Ordanance Disposal Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps.

Capt Read's wife Lorraine, known as Lou, said in a statement: "Dan was so brave, he was my hero and best friend, he was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle and friend. He will never be forgotten and always in my heart. I'm so proud and privileged to have been your wife."

Simon Decker, head teacher at Rainham Mark Grammar School, said: "We are vert sad to hear this news about Capt Daniel Read.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

"Clearly from the tribute issued by the Ministry of Defence Daniel served with great distinction, was very brave and saved many lives."
