Medway has joined in the celebrations following the birth of a son to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge yesterday.

Mayor of Medway Cllr Josie Iles said: “Any birth is a wonderful event and everyone in Medway, I am sure, will wish to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on becoming parents for the first time.

“Medway has always had close links with the Royal Family, thanks to the area’s long maritime history, and I hope that once things settle the new family will be able to find time to visit.”

Rochester Cathedral has set aside a special area for people to light candles and pray for the new-born prince. There will be a special quarter peel of bell before evensong on Sunday at 2.30pm to celebrate.

The boy, as yet unnamed, is a first grandchild for Prince Charles, who is due to visit Chatham's Historic Dockyard with the Duchess of Cornwall on Monday.
