A campaigner is to raise
the profile of efforts to save a Medway school from closure by
standing on a plinth in Trafalgar Square later today.

Cathy Hyland, vice chair of governors and campaigner for St
Peter's Infant School, Holcombe Road, Rochester, has been invited
to stand on an empty plinth in Trafalgar Square as part of the
Anthony Gormley One and Other art experiment.

The space is usually reserved for statues of kings and generals,
but people from across the UK have been invited to occupy the empty
Fourth Plinth and make it their own for an hour during an allocated
time slot.

The mother-of-two will take to the plinth between 11pm and
midnight tonight. During that time she plans to tell passers-by
about Medway Council's plans to close the school and why it should
stay open.

The school faces closure along with St John's Infant School, New
Street, Chatham, and Ridge Meadow, Churchill Avenue, Chatham, in a
bid to address surplus primary school places.

Cathy, 36, of York Road, Rochester, said: "I'm still a bit
speechless as I never thought I would get selected.

"I am nervous as I'm not very good at public speaking, but I put
myself forward for it because the school is so important to us and
I want to put our fight out there and highlight it to as many
people as possible."
