A minority of nuisance drivers are infiltrating a gathering of “responsible” young car enthusiasts and putting them in danger, police have said.

Officers and firefighters will be patrolling Medway City Estate this weekend to offer advice as well as monitoring to prevent any repeat of the events of last Friday.

District Ch Insp for Medway Simon Alland said both the police and fire brigade already patrol the estate, offering safety advice as well as prosecuting those breaking the law or the highway code.

He said: “The Medway City Estate is one of a number of locations where meetings take place.

“We have had some good success in other locations such as Laker Road where, together with the council, we have utilised traffic calming measures.

“The vast majority of people who attend these events do so responsibly and they are interested in sharing their knowledge and their cars..." - Ch Insp Alland

“The vast majority of people who attend these events do so responsibly and they are interesting in sharing their knowledge and their cars and I absolutely acknowledge that they have an interest there.

"However it does attract the minority who choose to behave in an irresponsible and anti-social manner.

“This incident best illustrates how dangerous some of these activities are.

“If we find people committing offences we will seek to prosecute.”

Ch Insp Alland added: “Clearly we have to patrol the whole of Medway and we have a number of priorities that we have to deal with, anti-social behaviour forms one of those, but equally the night-time economy on a Friday and Saturday night as well.

“The road isn’t the place to be racing, and if the vehicles are modified they may not be able to cope with the modifications and driving in a dangerous manner.

“They are putting both themselves and the general public at risk.

“It’s important to remember that insurance that people hold is very specific and modifications aren’t normally covered.

“If there are modifications and the insurance company aren’t aware of it, it may invalidate your insurance.”

He said he would encourage young drivers to visit KFRS’ road safety experience at Rochester fire station and asked members of the public to continue to report any dangerous driving.
