Money stolen from Rochester Cathedral

Burglars scaled scaffolding and broke into the roof and bell tower of Rochester Cathedral.

While inside they also stole cash from a donations box.

Rochester Cathedral spokesman Anna Drew said: "Cathedral staff were alerted to a suspected unauthorised entry into the bell tower at Rochester Cathedral between Thursday, July 25 and Sunday, July 28.

"There was no damage, but some money was taken from a donation box.

"This has been reported to police and security measures, including locks and alarms, have been increased in the bell tower, and on scaffolding at the cathedral.”

The cash, thought to be about £20, was being collected for minor repairs to bells.

A Facebook post, by one of the bell-ringers, on group Making Medway Aware said: "They kindly wrote their names on our noticeboard to brag of their break-in and theft.

"There are 17 cathedral bell-ringers who would like some time with them."

The cathedral made national headlines this week as the opening of crazy golf course sparked a fierce debate.
