A mother and daughter who died in a road crash in Strood have today been named as 84-year-old Elsie Blades and her 60-year-old daughter Marilyn Herlihy.
Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the incident in Station Road at 12.05pm on Sunday, July 26.
A silver Seat Ibiza car, driven by an 18-year-old from Chatham, collided with the two women, who both lived nearby, as they crossed near the junction with Bowes Road.
Mrs Blades was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital by Kent Air Ambulance but later died.
An investigation into the incident is on-going. Any witnesses who saw the Seat in the area should call police on 01622 798535 or to call Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
Nicola West, of Evelyn Close, heard the crash happen.
Nicola, 45, lives just yards from where the 84-year-old lived often used to speak to her as she walked past their house with her daughter, who Nicola says used to collect her from the home where she lived quite frequently.
She said: “I heard some screeching and then a loud thud, I knew it was a person that had been hit, not just another car.
“I rushed out there with my phone and it was sickening."
There have been calls for improved road safety measures after a second accident happened at the same spot this week.
A motorcyclist came off his bike and suffered minor injuries.
Local councillor Stephen Hubbard has led calls for better safety measures to protect pedestrians on Station Road.
But national roads protester Ted Pragnell said campaigners would have a job on their hands to convince authorities.
Mr Pragnell, of campaigning group Roadpeace, said local authorities acted on statistics, and "you shouldn't have to prove a point by getting people killed to get something done"
