Conservative MP Tracey Crouch returned to the House of Commons for the first time since her cancer treatment ended.
The Chatham and Aylesford MP spoke today about the government’s controversial Crime Bill which would give the police more powers to control demonstration's and protests.
Tracey commented that police were too often criticised for their conduct and that "99% of the time" they were doing their job.
She said: “It is unfortunate that recent events have overshadowed the good intention of copious measures in this bill.
"We do need to do more to protect women and children - why should we be afraid to walk somewhere or even exercise after dark?
"Rather than kill off this Bill we should be working cross-party to strengthen it. I am a supporter of the police and I think too often we do not stand up for them; we read about them when they mishandle things but not the 99% of the time they are silently working to keep us safe.
"But measures in this bill will help protect emergency workers not least by doubling the maximum sentence for assault on key workers.”
In the end she was one of 359 MPs to vote the bill through to its next stage.
Ms Crouch announced in June last year that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, adding that the illness had been “caught early”.
After promising to face the challenge “with my studs up”, the former sports minister has since kept people informed of her progress on social media, sharing updates on treatment as well as light-hearted comments about her newly-shaved head.
But in her post on February 16, Ms Crouch wrote: “Ding ding ding…had my last radiotherapy and I’m all done.”
"A massive thank you to the incredible team at (Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust) & my family/friends for their support throughout,” the MP for Chatham and Aylesford in Kent tweeted.
“Early diagnosis = better outcomes so check your bits & bobbins & see a GP if your worried. Off now to max out on life”.
Today, the 45-year-old shared a photo of herself on Instagram captioned "Good to be back in the House today".
Tracey has been supported by many of her followers, one commented to her post: "It's where you belong"
