Chatham and Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch raises money for charity after quitting government role

MP Tracey Crouch has been busy raising money for charity this weekend after resigning from her minister position.

She tweeted saying that she had spent the morning at Sainsbury's, helping her neighbour raise money for the Royal British Legion poppy appeal.

Smiling at the stand, she said in her tweet that people were being 'phenomenally generous with their donations'.

The Chatham and Aylesford MP resigned from her position as Sports Minister on Thursday after plans to limit stakes on fixed odds betting terminals were delayed.

In her resignation letter, Ms Crouch issued a graphic warning of the consequences of a delay, she said it would mean £1.6 billion would be spent - a significant amount of which "in our most disadvantaged areas including my own constituency.

"In addition two people will tragically take their lives every day due to gambling related problems and for that reason as much as any other I believe this delay is unjustifiable".

In an interview since resigning, with BBC Radio 5 Live she said: "There have been conversations that have taken place with many members of Parliament with different interests and, as I say, on this occasion, clearly I wasn't as persuasive as some of my other colleagues."

The Conservative also expressed disappointment that the proposed sale of Wembley Stadium had not materialised.

Ms Crouch said she hoped the deal could be resurrected to provide "opportunities to get a significant investment" into grassroots football.

She was asked about a newspaper report suggesting she believed a meeting between Conservative MP Philip Davies and Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Jeremy Wright was behind the delay.

But she refused to confirm any details, saying "All meetings are registered. I'm sure it will all come out anyway."
