Mummies mean business. That’s the message from mother-of-two Amy Bohan after chatting to other women at the school gates.
A year ago, she set up her own part-time event planning company organising weddings and parties.
It was only when she mentioned it at Thames View primary in Rainham, where her daughter Elsie, seven, is a pupil, she realised so many others had also set up their own mini-ventures.
Now the 34-year-old is organising an event at the Bloors Lane school where about 20 mums will showcase their wares and skills.
After years of staying at home looking after Elsie and her other daughter Polly, two, Amy set about starting Fabulous Planning Ltd. Using skills built up working for an events firm in London for 15 years, she decided to go it alone and studied in the evenings for a diploma.
She said: “A lot of women have their little sidelines but don’t get it out there and just rely on word of mouth. I would like to build up a network of mummies. After all, we are all in the same boat and can all help each other.” It can be hard to juggle and stressful, but you can do it.
“The other thing is that women are encouraged to go out to work, but child care is extortionate.”
While Amy, who is married to project manager John, 35, works from the family home in Nelson Road, Gillingham, she also spends three days a week at her office in Yalding, near Maidstone.
She said: “This way, you get the best of both worlds. I personally feel a better person for it and don’t think my children suffer in any way.
“In fact, I think they benefit from me not being here all the time and spending time with my childminder who does things like messy play, which I wouldn’t necessarily do.”
Her event is at the school on Tuesday, July 18, between 7pm and 9.30pm.
