Lib Dem supporters are hoping a song by a Medway musician will
rock the polls on election day.
They are working with activists whose viral media campaign for
Rage Against the Machine's song Killing in the Name made it a
surprise Christmas Number One.
They aim to pull off a similar chart success and give Lib Dem
leader Nick Clegg a voting day boost.
Peter Cook, a guitarist and business consultant, wrote and
recorded Democracy in the UK with local musicians - the band is
called Rock the Poll - during a 10-hour session in the basement
studio of his Park Avenue, Gillingham, home.
The lifelong Labour voter wrote the song out of his own personal
rage against the two-party machine and "pendulum politics." He
wanted to do something for the Lib Dems after saying they were the
only local party to help him in a recent parking
dispute.
The song has already started downloading, assisted by the
Facebook movement that got Rage Against the Machine to Number One.
Peter says his song has already proved more popular than the Lib
Dems' official song.
His latest book Sex, Leadership and Rock 'n Roll is popular at
management courses and argues that people can learn as much about
business and life from a rock song as a text book.
"Democracy was recorded by a motley crew of young amateurs who
are fed up seeing politicians acting more like their shoe size than
their age," said Peter. Royalties will go to charities, including
Demelza House for poorly children.
The song can be seen as a video at www.youtube.com or downloaded from the rock the poll website
