A kind schoolgirl and her twin brother helped raise more than £1,300 for two charities after both their nan and grandad were diagnosed with cancer.
Keiraleigh Collins and brother Kaiden, who are 10, chose to do something positive after their dad’s mum, Maria Hogwood, was diagnosed with cancer and their mum’s dad, David Panter, was also found to have the disease.
Keiraleigh, from Gillingham, decided she wanted to do all she could to raise money for charities that help cancer patients.
She had half her hair shaved off to boost the fundraising efforts and enlisted the help of Kaiden to organise a tombola.
The youngsters asked their neighbours and friends to donate prizes, and they raised £180 in the process.
Their dad’s boss, Rick Stevens from R & B Utilities Ltd, was so impressed with their fundraising efforts, he donated £260 to the cause.
Keiraleigh collected £875 from the head shave, and a JustGiving page netted her another £438.
So in total she and Kaiden raised a massive £1,313, and donated £875 to Macmillan Cancer Care and the rest to Cancer Research UK.
Mrs Hogwood, who lives in Hazlemere Drive, Gillingham, said: “I feel very proud of their efforts, bursting with pride.
“It was an amazing thing Keiraleigh did to shave half her hair off – she is only 10. She came up with this idea when I lost my hair.
“She wanted to put something back into the system for the treatment I had, and her brother helped with the tombola. I am very proud.”
Keiraleigh, a pupil at Twydall Primary, added: “I wanted to do something to help people that have got cancer as my nan and grandad have this horrible disease.
“I wanted to support them through their treatment and the nurses who help in so many ways through Macmillan Cancer Support.”
