Still buzzing from the incredible achievement of winning the Commonwealth Games and having just picked up two top accolades in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards, England Netball Captain Ama Agbeze was in Medway to get back to "grassroots".

The inspirational athlete led a training workshop for about 50 girls from King's School, Rochester teaching them her skills first-hand.

Ama, spent the morning at the school's sports hall in her role as a member of the new franchise London Pulse which promotes the sport in the community.

She took the young netballers' pre-season training session and at the same time deliver the message that the game was about having fun, socialising and keeping fit.

Ama, 36, who led the England Roses to gold stunning their rivals the Australians, said the victory has helped put netball in the public eye.

She said :"Before that people did not know about netball or last played when they were at school. Then suddenly as we were nearing the finals everyone was tuning in.

"It's not an elitist sport. There's something for everyone.There's mixed teams and walking netball, suitable for older women who played years ago and thought why not give it a go?

"I started playing at school and rose up to playing at county level. It's good to see the game played at grass roots level and give back something."

Last month the squad picked up the Team of the Year and Greatest Moment of the Year titles in the annual sports television awards.

Ama,said: "It's something I've watched since I was a child. I never dreamt I would be getting glammed up and going along and I'm still in shock that we won."

Ama, who has played for clubs in Australia and New Zealand, devotes much of her time to training.

In July, they will be competing in the World Cup in Liverpool where the top 16 teams will go head to head.

Sam Pembroke, King's head of netball, said: "We applied to London Pulse for a coach but never dreamt we'd get the captain.

"It has shown the girls at this level the pathway they can choose.The Commonwealth Games has played an important part, especially to see that amazing win."

Pupil Bella Butler, 17, said: "This morning has been amazing. Netball is such an outlet to relieve the stress of exams."
