New minister's airport views sought

Transport secretary Justine Greening

Mark Reckless has called on the new transport secretary to reaffirm the government's position on the idea of an airport in the Thames Estuary.

The Rochester and Strood MP has written to Justine Greening (left) asking if she will uphold the position of her predecessor, that the government has no plans to build any new airports in the south east.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson is adamant an airport needs to be built.

His plans for a floating airport - dubbed Boris Island - have been rubbished by a host of politicians. This week, Mr Johnson also threw his weight behind an idea for an airport at Cliffe.

Mr Reckless said: "I want the record set straight for my constituents once and for all.

"I strongly oppose the idea of a Thames estuary airport and having spoken to many constituents, I know that the vast majority of them do not support it either."
