The NHS is already reporting a record number people using A&E and out-of-hours GPs this Christmas.

Bosses say there was an "unprecedented surge" over the weekend (December 22-23).

One patient at Medway Maritime Hospital, Elaine Tidbury, wrote on our Facebook page today: "Standing room only at A&E Medway Hospital. Don't think the waiting room can fit anymore people in. Frightening."

Medway On Call Care is also believed to be under pressure.

An NHS spokesman said many people did not need to be seen urgently but wrongly believed their GP surgery was closed until after Christmas.

All GP practices in Kent and Medway are open as usual today, Christmas Eve, and on Thursday 27, Friday 28 and Monday 31 December.

Dr Peter Green, medical director of NHS Kent and Medway, said: “A&E and out of hours GP services are very busy at this time of year dealing with people who urgently need the services they provide.

"We would ask people to ensure they are only contacting these services if they cannot wait to be seen by their GP.

“GP practices are closed for only two days this week – Christmas Day and Boxing Day – and for one day next week – New Year’s Day.

“Please keep A&E and out of hours GP services free for those who really need them.”
