A road repeatedly blighted by roadworks has been shut again, this time for four days after a water leak.
One owner of businesses along Lower Rainham Road in Rainham has said the closure is “frustrating”, especially during his busiest time of year.
The route, which is regularly used by commuters, was barricaded off on Saturday night (December 14).
Repairs are being carried out by Southern Water engineers, just after the junction with Pump Lane, after a leak was found on a stop tap.
Saif Islam, who runs the Three Mariners pub, says the road is a “nightmare” at the moment.
The 37-year-old took over the establishment in October. He also owns Sundar Rachana, the award-winning Indian restaurant next door.
He said: “At the weekend we called all our customers to tell them the road was closed and that they would need to drive the other way round.
“However, not everyone wants to do that.
“In the last two days, we have had lots of cancellations and probably lost half our takings.
“It’s very frustrating and unexpected. I’ve taken on extra staff as I thought we would be busy due to Christmas.”
He believes that better communication is needed between the utility companies and businesses in the area.
He said: “When they were setting up outside, I went and spoke to the guys, who were very helpful and told me it was an emergency.
“We understand these things happen, but over the last few days we have received no update at all.
“Customers have been calling asking us and we are unable to tell them anything because we don’t know ourselves.
“I hope it is fixed by today. We have a busy night ahead including a big festive dinner and quiz.”
A six-and-a-half mile diversion has been put in place, with drivers being directed via Yokosuka Way and Ito Way, along the A2, Otterham Quay Lane and vice versa.
This has led to long queues on the A2 – especially during rush hour.
According to roadworks map website one.network, the work was due to be completed by Friday (December 20).
However, a spokesman for Southern Water confirmed it would re-open today.
He added: “Our teams have been fixing a water leak at Lower Rainham Road.
“We’re sorry for the disruption this has caused customers and businesses in the area. We’re expecting the work to be finished this afternoon and the road closure lifted.”
