A major car park will be closed from today for works on Rochester’s new station.

Corporation Street car park will be closed for up to eight weeks as the £26 million project nears completion.

Medway Council plans to raise the car park level, resurface it, install new lighting and landscaping during that time.

Network Rail has promised to finish the forecourt and the embankment alongside the car park.

It will mean the Blue Boar Lane and the Cathedral car park of Northgate will be the only public car parks around Rochester High Street.

Spaces will be further reduced on the third Sunday of each month as Rochester Farmers’ Market - which usually runs from Corporation Street - is relocating on a trial basis to Blue Boar Lane.

Medway Council has advised motorists instead to park at the old civic centre in Strood, or in Gas House Road.

A multi-storey car park with 325 spaces for station users is currently being built on Rochester Riverside and will be connected to the station via a new subway. Works will be completed in early 2016.
