Do you know an unsung hero, someone who always goes the extra mile but doesn’t seem to get the recognition they deserve?
Now you can give them some well-deserved appreciation by putting them forward for the latest Pride in Medway awards.
The hugely popular scheme is launched again today, and we are eager to hear about the people who impress you or make your community tick.
Last year we received more than 70 nominations, ranging from courageous children to exceptional fundraisers, to those who give up their precious spare time to run local groups.
The overall winners were Liz and Darren Shaw, who set up One Big Family, a voluntary group that helps to feed and clothe homeless people in Medway.
They received dozens of nominations and also got the seal of approval from the judges who heard about their tireless efforts, including Liz giving up her job to run the group.
After receiving the award, the couple said they were “gobsmacked”.
Liz added: “We are just a small part of this. We have a team of volunteers and amazing donors.”
Sponsors’ awards went to Kelly and Tommy Fraser, for raising awareness of early onset dementia; Medway Towns Footpath Group; university student Jonathan Small for his charity efforts; Foundation and ESOL students at MidKent College for their support of the Royal British Legion; Dr Farnaaz Sharief for helping people cope with stress and depression; domestic abuse support worker Deborah Simpson; and young fundraiser Jessica O’Hanlon.
Pride in Medway is sponsored by Medway Council, the Medway Messenger, mhs homes, uniper, Southeastern, MidKent College, AC Goatham and QHotels.
Ashley Hook, chief executive of mhs homes, said: “These awards have highlighted some amazing stories of individuals who make Medway a proud area to be a part of. mhs homes are delighted to be sponsoring the awards again this year.”
A spokesman for Uniper added: “Uniper is proud to be sponsoring Pride in Medway again this year.
“We never cease to be amazed and inspired by the lengths, effort and energy some people are willing to go to support their local community.”
