Notorious beggar 'Billy the Quid' back in front of magistrates days after being let out of jail

A notorious beggar who was only let out of prison days ago was back in front of magistrates again today over a similar offence.

Sukhvender Singh Deo, also known as Billy the Quid, was arrested on Saturday 26 December after asking somebody in Chatham High Street for money.

The 45-year-old formerly of Lester Road was immediately recognised by an off-duty officer who reported the incident to police.

Deo appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on today (Thursday), where he admitted the offence and was sentenced to 130 days in prison, suspended for six months. He was given a Criminal Behaviour Order until March 2017.

But the beggar is constantly in and out of prison. In September he was jailed for 120 days for breaching an anti-social behaviour order stopping him from begging and ordered to pay £180 court costs.

Deo was given his third Asbo in March 2014 after he admitted to harassment. It bans him begging or seeking charitable donations, alms or loans from anyone except a charity or financial institution.

But it has not stopped him pestering people for cash again.

In January 2015, he was also jailed for 120 days for breaching the order.

He was first given an Asbo in March 2006, and over the years on one occasion harassed a woman for money and fleeced £35,000 from her.

He was jailed for two years then, but has continued his habit of to re-offending each time he is let out of prison.
