More than 1,600 people have signed up for today's Medway Mile
- exactly a year before the 2012 Olympics opening
ceremony.
The mass mile-long walk and run is free and kicks off in
Rochester Castle Gardens at 7.30pm.
Register by visiting london2012.medway.gov.uk or turn up from 5.30pm. All entrants get a free t-shirt.
Children's activities - including a climbing wall, inflatables
and a Nintendo Wii challenge - start at 5.30pm followed by
under-13s races at 6.20pm.
An adults' elite race will be at 7.10pm before the full
Medway Mile at 7.30pm.
The Medway Council event is supported by the Medway Messenger
and among the runners will be Chatham's world race-walking champion
Paul Nihill.
Also following the course will be 77-year-old mayor Cllr Ted
Baker (Con), councillors and Messenger reporter Dan Bloom.
Following the Mile at 8pm will be live entertainment,
including acrobatic dancers, fire performers and aerial gymnastics,
followed by the official opening ceremony for tomorrow's Modern
Pentathlon European Championships.
The five-day event takes place at Medway Park in Gillingham and
will send 16 athletes to the Olympics.
