Chatham’s threatened Remembrance Sunday parade is due to go ahead, it has been confirmed.

It was feared the annual event could be cancelled because police will no longer automatically marshal ceremonies unless there is a public order risk.

Medway Council Labour group leader, Cllr Vince Maple, wrote to crime commissioner Ann Barnes, urging her to reconsider.

Amid apparent confusion, Chief Constable Ian Learmonth hurriedly convened a press conference to insist his force was always going to provide officers for the event and others.

But talks continued between the Chatham event organisers and the police in a dispute over the route.

It has now been announced that the parade will follow the historic route thanks to the help of local volunteers.

The parade will start as usual behind Debenhams, going along Chatham High Street to Victoria Gardens via Railway Street passing St John’s Church and Chatham Railway Station on the route.

It will be marshaled by Kent Raynet and South East 4x4 Response, supported by Kent Police.

Cllr Maple, said: “It is great we have resolved this positively, with the community working with the police to find the right outcome.

"I am grateful to all those contributing to ensure that Chatham’s parade can take place, allowing the maximum recognition and remembrance for those who fought for our freedoms."

Ann Barnes, Kent Police and Crime Commissioner added: ‘I’m absolutely delighted that the Parade will now go ahead.

"It is so important that as a society we take the time to remember those who lost their lives for us all - this parade is a great way for everyone to do this.”
