Patrols are being stepped up by police at an allotment site after yobs went on a wrecking spree, causing thousands of pounds of damage.

Dozens of plots in Lower Bloors Lane, Rainham, were vandalised in the early hours of Saturday morning.

As reported in Monday's Medway Messenger, several were torched, sheds were pushed over, fences trampled down and between 20 and 30 sheds were broken.

Plot owners said they have been plagued by vandals and anti-social behaviour since the allotments opened three years ago.

Medway Police has assured plot owners it is taking the investigation seriously and officers will be increasing patrols in the area.

DI Ian Humpheryes said: "We have received a number of reports in relation to damage caused at the allotments on Lower Bloors Lane in Rainham and I can assure those involved that every report has been taken seriously and will be thoroughly investigated.

"We have a number of lines of inquiry which the dedicated burglary team are pursuing."

Neighbourhood inspector Craig West added: "My officers have been tasked to carry out high visibility patrolling in the area in an attempt to prevent further damages and we are currently considering a variety of crime prevention methods."

Medway Council, which owns the site, is working with police and allotment holders to look at options to improve security.

A spokesman added: "These are mindless and completely unacceptable acts of vandalism that have caused a great deal of damage and upset at a much loved allotment site."
