A notorious beggar who persistently asks people for money despite being repeatedly banned from a town centre has been jailed.

Sukhvender Singh Deo, also known as Billy Deo or Billy the Quid, was arrested on Sunday for breaching an anti-social behaviour order banning him from begging in Chatham High Street.

The 45-year-old, formerly of Lester Road in Chatham, admitted the charge at Medway Magistrates Court and was sentenced to 120 days in prison. He was also ordered to pay a £180 court charge.

Sergeant Stephen Holpin said: "Deo has continually disobeyed orders placed on him to stop begging in Chatham High Street.

"To some people he may appear to be harmless but he is a real threat to vulnerable people, particularly the elderly and the young who he has regularly targeted.

"He frequently approaches people and pesters them for money, often making them feel intimidated and irritated.

"Kent Police take matters like this very seriously and I hope he spends his time in prison considering the impact his actions have on other people."

Deo has been jailed several times for ignoring ASBOs banning him from begging in the town centre.

In 2011, he was locked up for two years for hounding a good Samaritan until she gave him handouts totalling £35,000.
