A Medway motorcyclist, who died after coming off his bike into the path of an oncoming car, has been named locally as Philip Cooper.

Mr Cooper, 69, suffered serious injuries while riding with a group of fellow bikers in Edenbridge on Sunday morning.

He was airlifted to The Royal London Hospital where he died.

The retired builder, who lived in Rainham, was believed to have been negotiating a bend along the B2042 towards Four Elms when tragedy struck at about 10.50am.

The driver of Nissan Micra, the only occupant, was unhurt. The road was closed for most of the day while officers carried out an investigation.

Mr Cooper, a keen biker, had recently joined the well-established Medway Triumph Owners' Motor Cycle club and was on his first ride with members.

Dave Coveney, who was on the outing to Heathfield in Sussex, was riding ahead of him when the accident happened.

Mr Coveney said: "We are all absolutely numb. And we cannot understand how it came about. We are trained in first aid and were able to remove his helmet. But sadly he died."
