Hoo Parish Council wants to use farmland near village church as a burial ground

Farmland near Hoo Parish Church could be used as a burial ground.
Plans have been submitted to use the agricultural land in Vicarage Lane because the church graveyard is filling up fast.

The Rev John Smith said: “It is getting a bit tight and becoming more urgent to get extra space, especially with the increasing population.”
Permission was initially given for change of use of land known as Butthaw Meadow in 2002, but the landowner, Hoo Parish Council, has had to reapply because the agreement has expired.
Two parcels of land would be levelled and laid to grass with pathways and a shrub border to act as a screen. Access would be from Vicarage Lane.
The smaller plot is to be used initially and the other will be cultivated with wild flowers.
A report to Medway Council’s planning committee, which meets on Tuesday, said: “It is now considered that within the next five to 10 years there will be a need to expand the churchyard and as such, this application has been submitted with the view to prepare the land for burial use.
“Access is only from Vicarage Lane with funeral directors and chief mourners expected to use the road for unloading and the church grounds and car parks would be used to accommodate visitors.”

The site was chosen because it was away from homes and was “a natural extension to the existing graveyard”.
