The owner of a new pole-dancing studio in Rochester High Street has hit out at claims it is a breeding ground for prostitution.
Bewitched Pole Fitness opened despite objections from St Margaret's Banks residents, who say it will bring problems back to the area.
But owner Tabitha Griffiths, 21, who started pole dancing because she was too afraid to use a gym, said it is simply a place for women to get fit.
She continued: "Pole fitness should not be viewed as seedy or linked with prostitution.
"It is a fantastic way to get fit - it gives women confidence through having the strength to perform impressive moves and achieving a body tone and weight they desire.
"These classes do not involve striptease or the encouragement to find work which involves stripping."
Residents, however, have expressed concerns about potential problems.
One resident, who asked not to be named, said: "The next step from pole dancing is lap dancing and then prostitution.
"There are much better ways to keep fit rather than prancing around on a pole. The noise and the clientele that it will attract worries me. People on the street can be quite threatening."
Local resident Sandi Digby added: "I understand pole dancing is a way of fitness, but nevertheless this is a residential area and it is not the sort of thing that should be going."
Tabitha, a law graduate, said she does not want to see women soliciting themselves either.
She explained: "I urge anyone with concerns to watch some lessons.
"I'm sure by seeing how I teach and what is involved, they will feel confident that pole fitness is exactly that - pole fitness."
