Police arrested nine protesters yesterday amid clashes at the Camp Climate site in Medway.

Four of those were charged as tensions escalated in the week-long protest.

Police dressed in riot gear raided the camp in Dux Court Road, Hoo at 2.40pm on Monday. Demonstrators there are calling for a halt to plans for a new power station at Kingsnorth.

Reporter Jenni Horn said protesters were seen walking towards the police, in an apparent bid to hand themselves in.

Scuffles are believed to have started 10 minutes earlier.

It came hours after police made six arrests at the camp site. Police also attempted to seize protesters' vehicles, after they refused to move them on safety grounds.

At around 4pm police made a further two arrests of people believed to have broken bail conditions from a previous protest.

A police statement issued today said officers had become increasingly concerned about the lack of safe access or emergency exit routes from the field, particularly where vehicles were blocking the only usable gate.

It continued: "We raised this concern with their representatives yesterday and their response was to increase the number of vehicles obstructing this gate. Protesters were given three hours to move the vehicles, but made no attempt to resolve the problem.

"Officers therefore sought to provide clear access to allow safe evacuation and access for emergency vehicles should this become necessary. During the day, protesters have actively tried to prevent police from doing this."

Assistant Chief Constable Gary Beautridge said minimum force had been used.

He added: "However, the response from protesters, including those who have 'locked on' to the vehicles causing the obstruction, has required us to increase our presence on the site."

He said some protesters seemed intent on breaking the law, despite a police desire for a lawful protest.
