Medway Police has denied claims that female officers are unhappy trialling new uniforms because they reveal too much cleavage.
Officers in the towns are testing a new hi-tech zip-up polo shirt designed to wick away sweat and aid comfort.
The black tops are set to replace officers traditional white shirts but apparently they are not to everyone’s taste.
Reports carried in several national newspapers, including the Daily Telegraph and the Sun, say they are revealing and accentuate cleavage.
One source quoted in the Daily Express said: “It was immediately apparent the shirts were a little too revealing.
“It is understandable for female officers to be worried about their appearance - they have to present a professional appearance to the public.
“If they are being leered at by men it can only undermine them, especially when they are working at night trying to control groups of drink-fuelled young men.”
But a spokesman for Medway Police said the reports were unfounded.
“We are continuing to evaluate the feedback in relation to this uniform trial. So far the response from officers has been overwhelming positive and the fit of the shirt has not been raised as an issue.”
