Officers attended the NatWest branch and a man was arrested and taken into custody.

Stead-Gentson Knapp, 28, of no fixed abode was later charged with burglary, four counts of common assault, possession of a bladed article and attempted criminal damage.

He appeared before magistrates in Medway earlier today (August 8), but didn't enter any pleas in relation to the charges.

The case against him was adjourned until Tuesday, August 13 to tie up with other matters.

Knapp was remanded in custody until then.

It is understood the bank has been shut while enquiries take place.

A spokesperson for NatWest said: “We are aware of an incident at our Chatham branch and will aim to re-open as soon as we can.”
