Police have used special anti-social behaviour powers to shut down a flat amid claims of drug and drink taking.

Officers from Medway's community safety unit issued a 24-hour closure notice on the flat in Constitution Hill in Chatham, after complaints from neighbours.

But, after further investigations, police applied to Medway magistrates for a three-month closure order, which means the flat will be shut off and empty until August 18.

It came after residents put in increasing numbers of calls about the "goings-on" at the flat.

They claimed it had become a haven for drink and drugs use, people had been found sleeping in the communal hall and causing damage to the stairs.

They also said alcohol and drug paraphernalia was being left where young children could find it.

Sgt Steve Holpin of Medway’s CSU, said: "As a team we were very concerned as to what was occurring in this flat and I’m pleased we were able to use our powers to take swift action and to allay concerns by residents.

"We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour in the district and will take robust action where it is needed."
