Kent Police said they received three reports of burglaries in the Towns due to poor home security.

As the hot weather continues and windows and doors are left open, officers are reminding people that potential burglars will make the most of this opportunity.

DS Chris Dovey said: "Burglary is a violation of personal property and anyone who has been a victim of this type of crime will tell you how difficult it is to come to terms with.

"A lot of burglaries take place on the spur of the moment when a burglar sees an open window or other easy way in. We want people to protect themselves and their property by making sure they secure their homes properly."

Lock all doors and windows overnight and when you are not in the immediate vicinity. Even if you are only going upstairs it is advisable to lock the back door and always do so when answering the front door. Burglars will make the most of an open door or window if they can.

If you have UPVC doors, ensure they are double locked

Consider fitting extra security measures such as spy holes, door chains, door locks and intruder alarms

Keep garages and sheds locked - they often contain expensive tools and equipment that could be stolen or used by burglars to break in to your home

Mark your property and record serial numbers.
