A popular nightclub in Chatham, which has featured some of the country's top DJs, is being forced to close early after concerns that customers were becoming too drunk.

Police asked for a review of the licence for Mojo, which is in the basement of The Command House Pub, following safety concerns.

Since it reopened in August 2013, the venue, in Dock Road, has attracted large crowds to its nights which have included Hannah Wants, who is on the Radio 1 Residency line-up, as well as Sub Focus, Wilkinson, Dimension and Gorgon City.

Medway Council has now told the club it cannot serve alcohol after midnight and the venue must close by 12.30am. Live music and entertainment can only be played between 8am and 11pm.

Licensing officers visited Mojo at 2.30am on Tuesday, June 30, after they received information that an event was carrying on after its permitted licensing hours.

At the time, the venue’s licence permitted it to sell alcohol and have entertainment until 2am Monday to Thursday, and to close at 2.30am.

When the officers visited, music was being played and alcohol was still being served. They closed the venue immediately and requested a review of its licence.

Speaking after the licence hearing, Detective Constable Gill Angus, said: “This was an excellent result after a lot of hard work by all the members of the North Division Licensing Team to promote the licensing objectives.

“Licensing officers had previously met with organisers to raise concerns about events being incorrectly advertised and several attempts were made to discuss the issue with the venue before submitting a request for a review hearing following concerns around public safety. It was concerning to see the levels of drunkenness on a single night which left people vulnerable.

“I hope this result reminds licence holders of their responsibilities under the Licensing Act to actively promote the objectives and that we will take action against licensed venues which behave outside the law, risking the safety of their customers.”
