Thousands of people are trying to stay warm this afternoon following a power cut.

Supplies were cut to 2,820 customers in the Charing Road area of Twydall at 2.04pm because of a fault on the high voltage network.

Pensioner Jim Moore, who lives in the road, said: "It's going to get very cold if we're without power for long because it's so cold outside.

"I've also got a lot of food in the freezer, and I'm worried about that getting spoilt."

UK Power Networks, formerly EDF Energy, said it was working to restore power.

A spokesman said: "We understand how difficult it is to be without electricity, particularly in the current cold weather, and would like to apologise to those customers who are affected."

Earlier thsi week customers in the Long Catlis Road area of Rainham were left without power for more than 24 hours.

Last month a fault at a substation caused a more than three-hour power outage across Strood and the surrounding areas.
